Emerging from the Dark Side with… FEET

Brand new music is something that we get most excited about at Dark Side. We spend most of our time here trying to find the best in up and coming music and in this feature we show off one of our favourite new finds.

For this edition of 'Emerging from the Dark Side' we spoke to FEET's bassist Oli Shasha who gives us a little insight into the band.

Q. Who are you?

A. FEET are a 5 piece guitar band, four parts Coventry and one part Hitchin (Ben that is).

Q. How did the formation of the band come around?

A. Harry and George went out finding their niche (between 9 and 1130) and stumbled upon some other foes by the names of Joakim and Joe (nice scouting btw) who subsequently after not that much consideration decided to form a lil thing. Oli soon followed, as soon enough did a first demo, recorded solely with a lone microphone, several a beerski and a beginner's understanding of logic pro (oh and midi drums of course). Several gigs around the Coventry area followed and around halfway through the second year of monotonous studenting it actually started going somewhere. After acknowledging that the sky was now the limit for the band’s potential, Joakim buggered off to test such a logic and became a pilot. Callum and Ben joined a couple years into FEET’s existence leading to several alterations to style and direction, which brings us to now.

Q. Who were you first influences as a band?

A. When we formed our influences were pretty disparate (I’m talking Blink 182, Kendrick Lamar, The 1975 levels of disparate). Harry and Oli bonded over a love of the Chili Peppers, and consequently a couple early demos had an ingrained influence (slap bass, solos, all that shit). Fortunately, George’s inherent disdain of the chilis quickly spread and is to date the best bit of advice he’s ever contributed.

Q. What music are you listening to at the moment?

A. Hmmm. Well, I can’t speak for all of us, but most likely it’ll be a choice of something from the 60s/70s. The Kinks, Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart are some of the artists gracing the aux cable as of recent. It’s also worth a mention that at any given moment one of us are enduring a different Neil Young phase, he’s just that fucking good.

Q. Describe your sound in three words

A. Crease Pop 2

Q. Can you think of one thing that makes your band different to any other?

A. Oh lord, urrrmmm to be fair I'd say that these days almost all artists/bands have their own way of separating themselves from the majority, they’re rarely too similar, and as a result there’s no longer any sort of norm, especially I’d say for bands, so I’m just gonna throw your way some inside vocabulary. Probably would've ended up answering with one of these as an example anyway...

Q. For those who have never listened to you, what song should they listen to first and why?

A. English Weather - new tune so gotta plug it x

Q. What does the future hold for Feet?

A. Hopefully more than the past. Our debut album is set for release during the summer. We’ll be doing more releasing and touring than we’ve ever done before. As long as we’re constantly occupied with something i’d say that we’d have had a good year.

Live long and prosper, Oli x
