Emerging from the Dark Side with… GURU

Brand new music is something that we get most excited about at Dark Side. We spend most of our time here trying to find the best in up and coming music and in this feature we show off one of our favourite new finds.

Who are you?

Kieran ‘Kiery Boy’ Hunter- Guitar

Fergus ‘Fergy Boy’ Belfrage - Bass

Simon ‘Danny Boy’ Daniels - percussion

Tom ‘Tommy Boy’ Cherrill - vocals

How did the formation of the band come around?

750w

Tom and Kieran were friends for years in Maidstone and moved to Brighton. They met Simon on a hungover trip to The Breakfast Club and found out he played drums. I (Ferg) met Tom and Kieran at a party and a few months later Kieran asked if I knew any bassists. At the time all bassists I knew were already in bands and I didn't play. About a week later there was a cheap bass in a second-hand shop window which I bought on the spot and messaged Kieran if he still needed that bass player. He did. Next week was our first rehearsal and the rest is history.

Who were your first influences as a band?

Our influences have changed a lot over time but our first ones were stuff like Sabbath, Zeppelin, Oasis. Perhaps it's clear we weren't very good back then… As if we are now ha!

What music are you listening to at the moment?

Lazy by X-press 2 feat. David Byrne.

Describe your sound in three words

Wicked and Lazy

Can you think of one thing that makes your band different to any other?

I play with three strings I haven't seen that before. Mainly due to the fact I can't be bothered to get my bass fixed to be honest but I haven't needed a fourth so far

For those who have never listened to you, what song should they listen to first and why?

Consumer Helpline. Because it's wicked and lazy!

What does the future hold for Guru?

We've got a few gigs coming up in London and Brighton. We've got another single coming out end of April as well so keep an eye out for that. Generally just trying to keep busy playing shows, to be honest.
